Astilbe chinensis Lowlands Ruby Red (Lowlands Ruby Red Astilbe) One of the best red chinensis (or Chinese) types to come along in a while. Cherry-red blooms on dark stems look amazing set against deep green foliage.  Astilbe chinensis types and their hybrids do not need as much moisture as other species, although they still enjoy moist soil! They are slowly spreading, rhizomatous plants which bloom later than the Arendsii hybrids and generally feature hairy (rather than glossy) leaves.
