Late Planting Techniques to Try

Although we over-winter our perennials in their pots, they will be much happier in the ground.
We can’t guarantee these techniques will result in all plants making it through the winter, but they have been used with good results for some of our landscape customers.

If planting after October 1 but before Thanksgiving (or before the ground freezes):

  1. Prep the beds as usual
  2. Plant and water well
  3. Let the ground freeze
  4. Cover with landscape cloth and straw, etc., to keep the ground frozen until spring
  5. Hope for the best!!

If expecting to plant after the ground has frozen:

After the beds have been prepped but before the ground freezes, cover the area to be planted with frost blanket (or landscape cloth) and straw (other suitable material) to keep it from freezing.

  1. Before planting, pull back the cloth, straw, etc.
  2. Plant and water well
  3. Let the ground freeze
  4. Cover with cloth and straw, etc. to keep the ground frozen until spring. Can also be mulched, but be aware that many perennials do not like a thick mulch.
  5. And, of course, hope for the best!!
