Even though the leaves, stems and roots are poisonous, the stately Aconitum still deserves a place in our gardens because of its unusual and abundant blooms on strong stems. Aconitum x Stainless Steel is a terrific hybrid Monkshood selection. It forms an upright clump of deeply cut green leaves, bearing tall, showy branching spikes of rich steel-blue flowers in mid-summer. The effect is somewhat similar to Delphinium. Excellent as a cut flower. All Monkshood prefers rich, moist soil and performs best in cool-summer areas. Perfect in the border or at woodland’s edge, their bold presence makes an engaging companion to Anemone, Helenium and late-blooming Chrysanthemum. Stems may need to be staked. Easily divided in spring or fall. In warm regions this is best grown in partial shade. CAUTION: toxic if eaten/harmful via skin.
A Northern Sunset Perennial, it prefers rich, moist to well-drained soil in part sun to part shade.
