Hosta x Night Before Christmas is a sport of Hosta ‘x White Christmas’ that was bred and registered by John L. Machen, Jr. of Mobjack Nurseries in Foster, Virginia in 1994. Its leaves have creamy white centers that change to flashy pure white by midsummer and wide, dark olive-green edges. Pale lavender flowers on up to 3 ft. tall stems. ‘Night Before Christmas’ grows about 18” tall and up to 3 ft. wide. Compared to ‘White Christmas’, ‘Night Before Christmas’ has wider leaf margins and thicker leaves. It is one of the best white centered hosta for shade. A Northern Sunset Perennial, it prefers rich, well-drained to moist soil in part shade to full shade.
